In a report published by the Scientific Advisory Board of the United Nations Secretary-General on 18 September 2016, a more important role of Scientific Advice within the United Nations framework is encouraged in order to achieve the solution of the most pressing global problems.
On the 18th of September the report The Future of Scientific Advice to the United Nations was presented by the Scientific Advisory Board to the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Based on the crucial role that science can play in the solution to the most pressing global challenges, the report supports, among many proposals, an increase in investment in research and development by national governments. In this sense the role assigned to the United Nations becomes crucial, considering its privileged position to facilitate the gathering of data and define global priorities in areas of research and action. Special atention is given to the role of Science in the Sustainable Developments Goals Agenda, promoting an evidence-based implementation and monitoring process.
